OSR Parents:  This is an opportunity that we thought you might like to know about at the Ben May Main Library! This is not located at our school or affiliated with our school.
Good Afternoon,
I would like to take a moment to let you know about an opportunity we offer for your students.  We have a chess club that meets every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m at the Ben May Main Library.  Below are a couple of quotes stating the benefits of chess for students.  One is from a staff writer for The Washington Times, and the other is a quote from an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education.  I have been reading more and more articles that taut the benefits of chess for students.  Please help me spread the word about our chess club to your students.  We would love for them to join us for some fun afternoons and reap some awesome benefits.
Have a great day!
Ms. Rhodes

"Learning chess can be a fun pastime, but many educational professionals believe the activity can also improve a person'scritical-thinking abilities, math skills, and language expertise. The competition also can teach life lessons." -- Jen Waters staff writer for The Washington Times.
"Many lessons of life can be found on a chessboard, says Alexey W. Root, a senior lecturer in education at the University of Texas at Dallas. Sometimes sacrificing a piece is painful but ultimately may win the game, for instance. And it's a good idea to pay attention to pawns, because any one of them may travel across the board and become a queen.
Ms. Root also says studies have shown that children gaincognitive skills and improve reading comprehension when they learn to play chess. Children can use chess to improve a range of things, including spatial intelligence and self-esteem, she says." --  Chronicle of Higher Education, 00095982, 9/21/2001, Vol. 48, Issue 4
